Complete introduction to online roulette

Roulette is one of those games that are instantly memorable, thanks to its iconic wheel. One of the most popular table games at online casinos, roulette comes with various bets, and unless you know how the bets work, you are missing out on the strategy. It is imperative, therefore, that you understand well from the beginning the various bets on offer in the game of roulette.

What is the roulette wheel?

The main characteristic of the game of online roulette is the wheel. The number of slots on the wheel will depend on the version of the game you are playing: European or American roulette. If you are playing the European roulette version, the wheel has 37 numbers including a green 0, while in American roulette the wheel has 38 numbers, including a single 0 and a double 00.

We should also point out that numbers on the wheel are not in consecutive order. They are out of sequence and alternate between red and black, except for the zeros which are green.

When a player places a bet, the dealer proceeds to spin the roulette wheel in one direction and rolling a little metal ball in the opposite direction within. Once the wheel comes to a stop, wherever the ball lands is declared winner.

What bets are available in online roulette?

This is potentially the most important part of the game of roulette. Understanding the various types of bets on offer in this game, can help you make informed decisions.

Since the roulette table comes with a betting grid, you will be able to distinguish how numbers are laid out. Numbers are laid out in three vertical columns and 12 horizontal rows. From there, you will be able to place your bets.

There are two important types of bets available in the game of roulette: Inside Bets and Outside Bets. Inside Bets are bets that are placed within the betting grid on the table. Inside bets are usually bets on single numbers or else a batch of up to 6 numbers.

Outside bets, on the other hand, are bets placed outside the betting grid and usually entail larger groups of numbers, up to 18. Payouts compared to inside bets are usually lower for outside bets. You can read more about the rules of online roulette here.

How do I calculate odds in roulette?

Since there is a significant difference between Inside and Outside bets, you should be aware of the odds if you are aiming to win. When placing Outside bets, you have a higher chance of winning since the odds are closer to 50/50.

Inside bets, on the other hand, have bigger odds but the risks are also higher.

The house edge in roulette

If you are aiming to apply a roulette strategy, you need to keep in mind the house edge. The house edge is the advantage the casino has over players.

When it comes to European Roulette, the house stands at a mere -2.7%, while for American Roulette, it is a significant -5.26%. The house edge is therefore at a greater advantage in the game of American Roulette.

What are the ‘En Prison’ and ‘La Partage’ rules?

There rules are not available in every roulette game. You’d know if a specific variant offers them, by simply looking at the table.

The ‘En Prison’ rule applies to even number bets. If the winning number is the green zero, you can either decide to collect half the bet or else, leave it there for the next spin. If you lose the next spin, you will lose the entire bet.

‘La Partage’ is like ‘En Prison’ except for some key differences. This rule applies when you lose half your bet but are unable to leave the bet in place for the next spin.
