Microgaming – Next-gen Gambling

In the forefront of innovation

As gambling has evolved and entered new eras of accessibility Microgaming has consistently been leading the way for next generation gambling. Back in 1994, when the internet was still in its infancy, Microgaming took a leap in innovation and developed casino games to play online. It might seem obvious today but back then the idea of playing with virtual money in a web based game was insane.

Fast forward, it is 2005 and mobile games are starting to hit the scene. Micrograming was once again quick to jump the bandwagon and released one of the first mobile video slots, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Now, with smartwatches and other similar products becoming a big thing, one can only expect the creative team at Microgaming to pioneer this new era of wearable devices.

Developing games for wearables

So at the end of 2014 some game changing news hit the board: 2014 was the year when, finally, mobile overtook desktop in the number of people playing real money games. Not only that but mobile devices generated 51% of global remote casino revenue! That was over a year ago and the numbers have just increased.

What this means is that people want their gambling to be mobile, to be available on the go – whenever, wherever. That is why, in 2015, Microgaming released the first ever casino game to be developed for a smartwatch, the very popular The Dark Knight Rises. This was a huge step for Microgaming since it was the first online casino game available for play on a smartwatch. But they did not stop there. Shortly thereafter they, in conjunction with Royal Vegas Casino, released their second smartwatch video slot, the enhanced Thunderstruck.

But all of that was last year. Let us focus on the now and future. During ICE Totally Gaming 2016 Microgaming demoed their award-winning Virtual Reality Roulette. Played using an Oculus Rift DK 2 Headset with Leap Motion 3D Controller one is completely immersed in the reality-altering 3D experience. The technology not only allows you to see a 3D world but also allows you to interact with it as your hands and body parts will be projected into it. Also showcased during the event was the innovative way of using augmented reality for gambling.

Future of wearable gambling

It is not only smartwatches and Oculus Rift that is in the talks of future gaming but also other wearable devices like Google Glass and Microsoft HoloLens. Will it take off in the nearby future? Well it is hard to say, like with all new things, but one thing is for sure, the development of wearable devices opens a lot of doors for gambling opportunities. The questions is, who will open them?
