Tip of the Week – The Malta Gaming Authority

Also known as the MGA, the Malta Gaming Authority is a regulatory body that issues operating licenses to online casinos. But what, exactly, does all that mean? Let’s find out.

What is the MGA?

The Malta Gaming Authority is the name of the organization that used to go by the title Lotteries and Gaming Authority. Based in Malta, the regulator was established when a 2001 piece of legislation was passed on the island, bringing all gaming activities (aside from land-based casinos) under one regulatory umbrella.

In 2004, the Maltese Islands became the first country in the European Union to enact comprehensive legislation on remote gaming, making this regulator one of the most experienced and proven in the world.

What does the MGA do?

The MGA is responsible for the regulation of all manner of gambling, including casinos, national lotteries, non-profit games, gaming devices, remote gaming and more. Operators wishing to apply for a license in any of these sectors are subjected to stringent checks and must adhere to strict regulations.

According to the 2001 Lotteries and Other Games Act, the mission statement for the organisation is: “To regulate competently the various sectors of the gaming industry that fall under the Authority by ensuring gaming is fair and transparent to the players, preventing crime, corruption and money laundering and by protecting minor and vulnerable players.”

In other words, this means the MGA commits itself to a number of things:

  1. Protecting vulnerable persons and minors
  2. Protecting player rights
  3. Ensuring the integrity of games and gaming devices
  4. Promoting responsible gaming and
  5. Keeping all gaming activities free of criminal involvement

With these goals at the forefront, the MGA has proven itself a good standard of quality for online casinos and the presence of the MGA logo on a casino site is a sure way of determining whether a casino is a good place to play.
